1. Fremont Diner (2660 Fremont Dr., Sonoma, CA): On the road connecting the wine countries of Sonoma and Napa, what was once an often passed by dive called Babe’s was transformed 6 months ago into the sort of roadside gourmet diner most of us could only dream of having in our own town. But perhaps only in Sonoma could a “diner” source almost all of its ingredients from produce to pig from local farmers. It is hard not to order the pulled pork and coleslaw sandwich fetchingly named “The Whole Hog” but lighter fare such as a green salad of local arugula and dandelion is equally tempting. Don’t worry about leaving room for dessert as homemade cookies and butterscotch cake are displayed right at the cash register daring you to try, just try to make that cookie wait for the end of the meal. As Scribe winemaker Andrew Mariani said to me on a recent visit, be it a grilled cheese sandwich with local cheese and artisanal bread or free range fried chicken and homemade waffles, at Fremont Diner they “just do it right”.
2. Rancho Viejo (19876 Sonoma Highway, Sonoma, CA): It is a good sign when locals will stray from their normal taco shop (in the case of Sonoma, a little joint called Juanita, Juanita) to try the new kid on the block. It is an even better sign when those same locals keep going back to that new kid and telling their friends to check it out too. Just a few months old, I would speculate Rancho Viejo is bringing in the neighbors in part because it is not your usual taco shop. In fact, there are no tacos on the menu. What you will find are tortas, burritos and specialties of the house including a deeply flavorful chili verde with nopales sampled on a recent visit. Service can seem so slow you think you were on Mexico time but no worries because the crispy thick fried tortilla chips will keep you occupied scooping up fabulous homemade guacamole packed with onions and tomatoes and tomatillo salsa with a real kick. Sure by the time the food gets to the table you could have flown to Mexico but one bite of fork-tender braised pork shoulder is good enough to make you forget you even own a watch.
3. Red Grape Pizzeria (529 1st St. West Sonoma, CA): While out-of-towners pack the fancy restaurants on the historic Sonoma Square, locals know that just off the square is one of the best pizza restaurants in town. Done “New Haven” style, the pizzas at Red Grape feature super thin crusts baked in extremely hot stone lined ovens. The owners make the most of their surroundings topping pizzas with farm fresh produce and cheese such as the gorgonzola and pear white pizza or the Al La Norma with eggplant, tomatoes, and kalamata olives. Non-pizza eaters are welcome too with hearty salads, creative Panini, and grilled specialty items. The highchairs along the wall are the tell tale sign that this is a good place to take the kids. But Red Grape is just as good a place to role to solo; ride your bike to the square, grab a seat at the bar and tuck in for a glass of vino and personal sized pie.
